Job Description

The Plant Pathology Intern is an integral part of the Plant Diagnostic Laboratory and Field Pathology Teams. The intern will receive hands-on training in plant disease diagnosis and diagnostic test development. There will be opportunities to work with other members of the Plant Pathology Team, including job shadowing in inoculum production, filed inoculation and disease characterization processes. The intern will have a laboratory diagnostic assay research project that he/she will present at the conclusion of the internship. Position is located in Johnston, IA and duration is mid-May/early-June through December 2018.

The successful candidate will assist the Lead Diagnostician in the day-to-day operation of the diagnostic lab. This will include, but is not limited to: receiving samples and checking them into a diagnostics database, initial observation of samples for symptoms and determination of evaluation method(s) needed for proper diagnoses, completion of sample diagnoses, entering information and images into a database, and communicating diagnostic reports to sample submitters as required. Diagnostic methods may include, but are not limited to: microscopy, pathogen isolation on media, ELISA tests, DNA/RNA isolation, PCR and other molecular tests as deemed appropriate. The intern may assist with disease inoculations, data collection and other tasks important to the success of the Field Plant Pathology Team as needed.  

Job Qualifications

Minimum of Senior undergraduate standing majoring in Plant Pathology, Plant Health and Protection, Agronomy, Biology or related discipline. Graduate program candidates will be strongly considered.

The intern should have an interest in pursuing a career in the biology sciences within industry, in particular the plant health sciences. Education and experience in plant pathology and molecular techniques are strongly desired. Courses taken should include the basic curriculum for the biological sciences, including one or more classes in microbiology, biochemistry and basic laboratory research methods. Candidates should be able to work well individually or as part of a team and have a strong desire to gain real world experience in plant disease diagnostics. Attention to detail and a desire to learn about plant disease diagnostics are a must!
